Trish's Story

In September 2021, Trish joined St Petrocs as a Supported Accommodation Officer. She had been keen to return to the sector when she came across our advert. After some research, she quickly realised that our ambition resonated with her. “Their mission statement to ‘end homelessness in Cornwall’ ignited my own aspirations,” she writes. “I have always believed that everyone has the right to have a home that they can feel safe in.”

As part of the Residential Services, she helps facilitate clients to move into our accommodation and live in a place of safety and stability, where they can begin the journey towards independent living. “Once someone feels safe and has the right support in place more positive things start to happen for them and they can then begin to achieve things and look forward to a better future,” she says.

St Petrocs: What motivates you to come to work each day?

Trish: It is knowing that I am making a difference to somebody’s life. It is knowing that there is one less person sleeping rough or sofa surfing because we have booked them in to one of our hostels. It is seeing how they react to knowing they can have a warm shower or bath and they can cook themselves a meal. But most importantly to me, it is knowing someone is now feeling safe and has the support that they need to progress. It’s like watching someone breathe again for the first time.

What do you think of the culture here at St Petrocs?

The whole organisation works as a team and being a new member of staff, I have received the best support and guidance – not only from my team but also from other departments. St Petrocs offer benefits such as an Employee Assistance Programme, Life Insurance, free eye tests and they have family friendly policies and offer ongoing training to support you in your role. They also offer a generous salary compared to other organisations advertising similar roles. We are listened to, valued, and provide an amazing service to people in need. But it’s not only what we do to end homelessness for people, it’s how we are treated as employees.

What would you say to someone who was considering applying to work with us?

My advice would be “Stop thinking and start applying!” You won’t regret working with us. Our ambition is to end homelessness in Cornwall, and we need you to help make this happen!
